Glossary: Waste Factor
A waste factor (also known as a cutting allowance or material buffer) is an added percentage applied to the net material area of a project. This covers cut-off ends, board damages, structural angles, and spacing offsets incurred during installation.
Allocation Standard Ratios
Standard calculations recommend different waste factors depending on layout pattern complexity:
- 5% to 7%: Basic straight grid installations in large rectangular rooms where cutting losses are minimized.
- 10% (Default standard): Standard strip or plank layouts, covering normal cutting along boundaries and staggered joints.
- 15%: Herringbone, diagonal, or chevron plank patterns requiring precise miter cuts at all wall perimeters.
- 20%: Irregular wall profiles, curved rooms, or small closets with dense cutting margins.
